“Random Acts of Aloha”
Jessica Rich of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii presented Major Dave Hudson, Hawaiian and Pacific Islands divisional commander, with a Random Acts of Aloha award for The Salvation Army’s efforts to help stranded travelers at Honolulu International Airport following the October earthquake and blackout. “The Salvation Army showed our aloha spirit by providing more than 3,000 meals as well as candy and bottled water to visitors and airport staff,” said Rich.
Red Shield quilters’ fingers fly
Every Saturday for the past six months the Denver Red Shield Senior Drop In Center was a beehive of activity as the quilting club, 26 strong, made quilts for three local nursing homes. On Saturday, October 7 the quilting club presented A/Captain Roberta McKinney with 15 finished quilts, which will be given to residents by the Red Shield’s community service ministry during the
holidays.
Santa Barbara cares for kids
Celebrating over 20 years of providing quality childcare in Santa Barbara, Kingdom Kids Childcare Center, a ministry of the Santa Barbara, Calif., corps, has renovated its three playgrounds to provide more outdoor educational and recreational activities for its students.
“We appreciate the support given by The Junior League of Santa Barbara, The Mosher Foundation, The Santa Barbara Rotary Foun-dation, The Williams-Corbett Foundation, and The Wood-Claeyssens Foundation,” stated Corps Officers Captains Robert and Jill Steiner. The childcare center provides year-round preschool, after-school and summer camp programs for children ages 2-12.
Tucson Amphi promotes safe alternative
Hundreds of kids and their families enjoyed a safe and fun afternoon featuring games, music and entertainment October 28 at the Tucson Amphi Corps’ third annual Harvest Festival. Corps Officers Captains David and Erin Kauffman and the Amphi Corps’ advisory council teamed up with community leaders, including the Southern Arizona Christian Biker’s Association and the Peacekeeper’s Organization to provide a family-friendly evening and raise awareness of safe options for youth prior to Halloween. Other contributing businesses include: Albertsons, Sam’s Club, Lowe’s, Costco, Home Depot, Baskin Robbins, Sonic, Payless Shoes, Dairy Queen, Applebee’s, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Arizona Feeds, and the Nike Go Store.
African Children’s Choir to visit Moore St.
The internationally acclaimed and Grammy-nominated African Children’s Choir will perform a free concert at the Portland, Ore., Moore Street Corps on Sunday, November 12 at 7 p.m. The group is composed of orphaned children ages 5-12, many of whom lost parents due to AIDS, poverty, disease and war. The group, which has performed on Good Morning America, at the Dove awards, and at Disney World, has been called an ambassador for all children in Africa. Corps officers are Captains Robert and Donna Marshall.
