New Hope shelters homeless
During the recent heavy snows in Colorado, over 150 men, women and children escaped the frigid temperatures at the New Hope Center, The Salvation Army’s homeless shelter. There, they received a warm place to sleep and morning and evening meals. They also had access to counselors, showers and laundry facilities.
The Center is the primary location in Colorado Springs’ Emergency Home-less Warming Shelter Plan and can take up to 40 additional clients when weather conditions are extreme. The Salvation Army undertook operation of New Hope from the Red Cross in 2004.
NWB plays anthem for Sonics
Fifteen members of The Salvation Army’s Northwest Brass Band played the national anthem at the Seattle Sonics game against the Washington Wizards recently. Northwest Brass is made up of Salvationist musicians from ten SA church locations in Washington. Northwest Divisional Music Director Bandmaster Carl Darby leads the band. Sonics coach, Nate McMillan, said that it was the best national anthem he’d ever heard, and Sonics staff invited the band back at any time, indicating they would support the Army in any endeavors in which they could partner.
Yakima cares for kids
The Salvation Army Yakima Temple Corps, Wash., offers a class every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. for the local youth. The program’s focus is to help teenagers get off the streets and leave their personal problems behind. According to Envoy Eduardo Alfaro, in-charge, these problems include addictions or involvement with gangs; in addition, the corps is dedicated to reinforcing family and moral values. Approximately 15 teenagers are enrolled in the program.
Hemet Home League celebrates
The Home League at the Hemet Corps, Calif., had a successful St. Patrick’s Day tea brunch. The ladies invited the Moreno Valley Home League to join them for a day of fun, singing, and fellowship. “We are building our Home League group, and about 22 people came,” said Captain Beverly Martinez, asst. corps officer. “Our Home League uses the four-fold program every month: We have worship the first week of the month, and then scrap booking the second week, which the ladies always enjoy. Every third week we do service and help around at the corps. Lastly, we go on trips for fellowship. Our Home League is continuing to grow with God’s blessing.”
SA assists in topoff 3 exercises
The Salvation Army took part in the recent week-long Congressionally-mandated exercise, TopOff 3, designed to strengthen the nation’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from large-scale attacks. The exercise was conducted in New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Canada and the United Kingdom. Army volunteers served meals, beverages, and snacks at SA canteens to those involved in the drills.
