General Eva Burrows (R) recently visited Colorado Springs, bringing an inspirational message in the Sunday morning service. She participated in a Sunbeam Court of Honor, presenting badges to six excited young ladies, including Sunbeam Stephenie Owen (daughter of CO’s Majors Steve and Judy Owens) and who received her Commissioner’s Sunbeam Medal and Bronze Star Award.
The General said it was a “first” for her as she was made an honorary soldier of the corps. Our former international leader will be in Colorado twice a year as a member of the board of directors of the locally based International Bible Society.
LOOK TO 1999
Word has just been received that the Western Territory will host the 1999 National Advisory Organizations Conference (NAOC) April 29-May 2, 1999. Make a note of this important date!
HELPING HAND
The San Bernardino Ladies’ Auxiliary Luncheon was a tremendous success as 200 attended this fund raiser for the Hospitality House. “Holiday Decorating with Plants and Flowers” was the theme, with a demonstration by Flowerland of San Bernardino. $4,500 was raised to help with the Army’s numerous local needs that arise. We are grateful to the merchants who donated prizes.
The Hospitality House feeds 150-200 indigent persons a night and sleeps 78 women, children and men. All this is made possible through the help of the community, say Majors Russell and Jacque Fritz, corps officers.
TURKEY DRIVE
The Army in El Paso County fed the area’s hungry on Thanksgiving, thanks to a one-day turkey drive held at Smith’s Food and Drug Centers. Two thousand people were served at the corps dining room. Captain Mike Olsen, county coordinator, says, “We always ‘step out in faith’ to give these people a meaningful and rewarding Thanksgiving. This is quite a challenge when we depend fully on donated food. We are grateful to the people of the community, who always come through.”
RING THOSE BELLS!
The annual Red Kettle Christmas Campaign gets under way with a twist this year in San Diego County, as local churches are asked to ring their bells at noon to signal the launch of the drive.
CAPTAIN BECOMES COLONEL!
Captain David D. Roehl, corps officer at Casper, Wyo., was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, USAF Auxiliary. “Colonel” Roehl currently serves as the Wyoming Wing chaplain, supervising chaplains within the eight Civil Air Patrol Squadrons in the state.
Chaplain Colonel David R. Van Horn, Emeritus National Chief of Chaplains for CAP, says, “We are very pleased with the excellent rapport and support of Salvation Army clergy such as Chaplain Roehl, to the fulfillment of the USAF Auxiliary’s mission and role in our society.”
CONCORD BAND TO UK
The Concord Corps Band (B/L Richard Spicer) is busily preparing for their 1997 Spring Tour of the United Kingdom. This talented group will be in Northern Ireland for Easter, then to Scotland and England. In connection with this trip, they are involved with a demanding rehearsal and concert schedule along with normal corps activities.
90 GOLDEN YEARS
The many friends of Brigadier Sara Jones (R) will help celebrate her 90th birthday on December 23, as well as 75 years of officership. Congratulations to this wonderful lady!
