Celebrity Luncheon Raises $84,130
The Salvation Army of King County, Wash., held its annual Celebrity Soup Line Luncheon recently. Approximately 880 guests, including 90 celebrity table hosts were treated to a program featuring testimonials from individuals helped by Army programs, a keynote speech by former U.S. congressman and NFL Hall of Fame member Steve Largent and emceeing by KOMO-TV meteorologist Steve Pool. The luncheon raised a record $84,130. Money raised goes directly towards funding Salvation Army human services programs in King County.
Juneau Celebs Help Raise Funds
Major Nila Fankhauser reports Juneau’s Women’s Auxiliary was honored to have Alaska’s first lady, Nancy Murkowski, and Juneau’s Mayor, Sally Smith, featured as models at the annual Strawberry Luncheon and Fashion Show; both wore outfits purchased at Army thrift stores. Other models included local comic and D.J. Jeff Brown, author Riley Woodward, and Major Vickie Shiroma. Renee Guerin was mistress of ceremonies. A capacity crowd of over 140 enjoyed the show, to help the auxiliary raise $1,500.
San Francisco celebrates the Army
In celebration of National Salvation Army Week, San Francisco honored its volunteers by inviting them to a Giants game. The San Francisco Giants donated 75 tickets to a game against the Montreal Expos. “It was great to see volunteers from corps and corporate groups take in the Giants game and be celebrated for their contributions to the Army,” said Dana Hosjack, volunteer coordinator in San Francisco. Volunteers came from the Mission Corps, the Harbor Light Center, Chinatown Corps and the Turk Street Corps. Corporations and organizations whose employees donated their time included Hands on San Francisco, St. Anthony’s, Bechtel, and Genentech Inc. Chris Toy produced a community spotlight piece and Major Dawn Rocheleau, Santa Clara, sang “Take Me out to the Ballgame.“
Shelter for fire victims
The Salvation Army provided refuge for elderly residents in Centralia, Wash., after an early morning blaze forced the seniors to flee their apartment building. A 61- year old man died in that fire and several others were treated for smoke inhalation. The Army’s emergency disaster services team sheltered 30 senior citizens, family members who were assisting their loved ones, and six staff and volunteers from the Red Cross who were doing case management. “That’s what the Army’s all about, being there and ready in a time of crisis,” said NW Division Director of Emergency Services Lonnie Franklin.
Ildra Smith retires
Ildra Smith, a 58-year veteran of the music forces at the Portland Citadel/Tabernacle Corps, Ore., formally retired from active service in the band and songsters. Major Jeffrey Martin, corps officer, conducted the retirement at the annual Musicians’ Dinner.
Linkletter speaks at Spirit awards
Show business star Art Linkletter, 91, was guest speaker at the Orange County Advisory Board “Spirit Awards” civic dinner. KOCE news anchor Ed Arnold was host for the awards ceremony. Dr. John Huffman, pastor of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach received the Others award. Charles Potter received the William Booth award, and Ona Walls received the Volunteer of the Year award. The Spirit of the Army award was presented to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Change of appointment
Captain Amanda Mitchell, presently serving as Carson City corps officer, has been appointed Clovis corps officer, effective July 2, 2003.
