SANTA ROSA BBQ

Under the direction of Tutoring and Mentoring program director Jennifer Freitas, and with the assistance of 40 volunteers, the Santa Rosa Corps, Calif., completed a successful school year. To celebrate, the corps hosted a barbecue for the volunteers, students and families involved during the spring semester. Freitas and Capt. Ian Robinson spoke of the tremendous progress made by the 47 students in their studies and presented awards and gifts.

PARTNERSHIP BENEFITS KIDS

“Last month the Modesto Red Shield, in partnership with the Modesto Bee, held the 6th annual Kids’ Day,” reports Corps Officers Derek and Angela Strickland. “A special edition of the paper was sold on street corners benefiting children of the Modesto Red Shield and Turlock Corps.” The event raised over $56,000 for Army programs. Praise God for another successful and record-breaking event!

IBS TEAMS UP WITH TSA

With wildfires raging approximately 20 miles from its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Inter-national Bible Society (IBS) delivered 3,430 special Scripture-based booklets to The Salvation Army for distribution to fire victims, firefighters and disaster workers.

“The International Bible Society’s support is helping us achieve our goal of providing for the practical needs of those impacted by the Colorado fires and ministering to them spiritually,” said Intermountain Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Harold Brodin.

OFF TO ICO

Two Western officers are slated to attend the International College of Officers (ICO) later this year. Lt. Colonel Alicia Burger, Crestmont College vice-provost for cross cultural studies, will attend the 174th session, July 24 – September 16, 2002. Major Rose-Marie Leslie, Southern California Division women’s ministries secretary, will attend the 175th session, October 16 – December 9, 2002.

ALASKA’S ACTIVE AUXILIARY

The Anchorage, Alaska Women’s Auxiliary raised over $8,000 at the “Springtime in the Garden” luncheon and auction, reports Auxiliary President Leah Hoffman. Libby Riddles, who made history in 1985 as the first woman to win the Iditarod, a 1,049-mile dogsled race from Anchorage to Nome, was guest speaker. More than 200 attended the event.

WELL DONE

Congratulations to Captain Brian Saunders, Crestmont College director of continuing education and coordinator of off-site studies, who has been awarded his Master of Arts Degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

REMEMBERING TED

Hitting legend Ted Williams, who died recently at 83, grew up in San Diego, Calif., where his mother, May, was a Salvationist. Paul Smith, a reporter for MLB.com, notes that young Ted “often accompanied his mother on her missions to bars and brothels in San Diego and Tijuana, and witnessed the zeal with which she worked.”

SA PARTICIPATES IN MEMORIAL

Pastor Randy McKinley, of the Mountain Community Church in Lake George, Colorado, and Captain Roy Wild, Fountain Valley corps officer, officiated at the memorial service to honor four Oregon firefighters who were killed in a traffic accident en route to the Hayman fire. Envoy Clair Little, Boise, Idaho, also participated in the service, attended by more than 200 firefighters.

NEW APPOINTMENTS

Glendale, Calif., Corps Officers Captains Gwyn and Ann Marguerite Jones will take command of the Luton Corps and Luton Leagrove Outpost in the United Kingdom Territory’s Central South Division, effective August 1, 2002.

Majors David and Janet Howarth, who serve in the UK Territory, are appointed as Colorado Springs corps officers, effective July 17, 2002.
