CFOT holds Crestmont Classic tennis tournament
The first annual Crestmont Classic Tennis Tournament was held recently, in cooperation with the Peninsula Racquet Club, which raised over $9,000 to support the College for Officer Training. “The event provided a great opportunity for the cadets to gain knowledge in community involvement, public relations, and fundraising,” said Lt. Colonel Donald Bell, chief secretary. Majors Donald and Arvella Hostetler are CFOT leaders. The Peninsula Racquet Club is located adjacent to the Crestmont campus.
Denver Red Shield hosts USA Amateur Boxing championships
The Denver, Colo., Red Shield’s boxing program recently hosted the 2007 USA Amateur Western Senior Boxing championships. The winners of these matches will qualify for the US Olympic Trials to be held in Kansas City this spring. The senior division is the most experienced amateur boxing division. “The Salvation Army is honored to be chosen to host this prestigious event,” said Captain Ron McKinney, administrator.
During the championships, Alvin Logan signed a letter of intent to the University of Washington on both a football and educational scholarship. Logan is a graduate of the Red Shield “Disciples” football program.
Future Eagle Scout does ARC a good turn
Michael Edlefsen, an 18-year-old Forest Grove, Ore., high school senior, recently approached the Portland ARC with a goal to collect 750 pounds of clothing as part of an Eagle Scout rank requirement. With four days of hard work, lots of planning and 56 good friends helping him, a total of 3,082 pounds of clothing were sorted, folded, bagged and collected. He is grateful to the community of Forest Grove, Venture Crew 159, his church and all his school friends for their help and generosity. Michael hopes one day to get his graduate degree in Music Education, and become a band teacher.
Nazarene Bible College relates to SA
The College for Officer Training (CFOT) has recently negotiated an articulation agreement with Nazarene Bible College whereby Western Salvation Army officers can obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Ministry, with an emphasis on leadership annd ethics. Look for more information in an upcoming New Frontier.
