Don’t miss Urbana ‘06
Urbana 2006 will be held in St. Louis, Missouri December 26-31, 2006, reports Captain Kyle Smith, territorial youth secretary. As in past years, partial scholarships will be provided to young Salvationist adults (officers included) between the age of 18 and 30 who are interested in short or long term mission work. Each of the West’s divisions will provide scholarships for up to six delegates. For more information, contact your corps officer and/or your divisional youth secretary.
Alaska keeps busy
“During the recent Salmon Derby in Petersburg, Alaska, those who didn’t want their catch were encouraged to donate it to The Salvation Army,” write Captains Joel and Rhonda Harmon, corps officers. Tonka Seafood processed the fish free of charge and delivered over 80 pounds of salmon for distribution to those in need. Earlier, at the July 4th festival young people sold hot dogs and baked goods and raised $350; the proceeds helped youth attend summer camp.
In Anchorage, the Army served more than 1,300 meals at the traditional July 4th pancake breakfast. Thanks to event sponsor Totem Ocean Trailer Express and other local businesses, including Fred Meyer, more than $6,300 was raised for the Army’s McKinnell House, a shelter serving two-parent families and single parenting fathers.
Fowler earns degree
Captain Shari Fowler, Olympia, Wash., corps officer, was recently awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology: family studies, with honors, from Corban College. Congratulations, Captain!
Denver honors Green
Larry Green, KCNC TV, Denver, was honored this spring at a Doing the Most Good luncheon where he was cited for his more than 23 years of service to The Salvation Army as the media spokesperson for food drives and Red Kettle Campaigns. Larry, who retired as the weatherman for the CBS affiliate, was honored by more than 300 community leaders and Salvation Army donors for his loyalty and dedication to the Army. Nearly $230,000 in pledges was generated at the luncheon.
