Cordova, Alaska celebrated its annual Iceworm Festival with The Salvation Army participating throughout the weekend. Members of the brass ensemble represented the Anchorage Corps and the Anchorage Korean Corps. The highlight of the festival was a parade that featured stirring renditions by the ensemble of “This is the Day” and “What a Mighty God We Serve.” The town of just over 2,000 came alive for the parade, lining the main street and cheering on all the marchers.
Other events with Army participation included an early morning memorial service for those lost at sea, various open air opportunities and special music for a community church service on Sunday. Lt. Ann Ward, commanding officer of The Salvation Army’s Cordova Outpost, arranged for the ensemble’s visit and contributed to the leadership of the festival.
While no iceworms were spotted during the weekend, there were plenty of bald eagles and sea otters, along with festive expressions by all who took part in in the many events. Neighborly warmth was evident despite the cool weather. The ensemble felt that the opportunity to share Christ’s love made the weekend a positive outreach experience.
