Korea Territory celebrates 99 years of Salvation Army ministry.
Chief of the Staff Commissioner Robin Dunster visited South Korea recently to lead worship and participate in the Korea Territory’s celebration of 99 years of Salvation Army ministry. After Korea’s Territorial Commander Commissioner Chun, Kwang-pyo welcomed her, Dunster conveyed General Shaw Clifton’s greeting and described her visit as part of the closing chapter of the first history book of the Korea Territory, with the General’s visit to lead the Centenary Congress in 2008 commencing the second volume.
The next day, Dunster visited the Bridge Centre, an emergency hostel for the homeless located near Seoul Station where many destitute people gather. She then visited the Seoul Broadview Children’s Home where she spoke with the children and shared a meal with the staff and children.
That evening 280 Salvationists attended the public welcome meeting held in Taejon Central Corps hall. Along with Dunster’s message on Paul and Timothy, highlights included worship dance by Taejon Central Corps worship team and a men’s vocal ensemble from Sam Sun Corps.
The following day the international leader visited a number of cultural centers, and a journalist from Kukmin Ilbo newspaper (Citizen’s Daily) interviewed her. The visit coincided with the historic summit being held in Pyongyang between the two national leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). This was only the second such meeting ever held. When asked about the likelihood of peace being achieved on the peninsula, Dunster responded that only faith in the Lord Jesus Christ offers true peace to all worldwide.
Saturday’s events included the dedication of a completely remodeled and extended campus for the Officer Training College at Kwachun. In the evening the Chief gave a visual presentation showing events and strategies taking place throughout the Army world.
Sunday’s 99th anniversary commenced with Dunster participating in the Seoul First Corps holiness meeting, held in the historic Central Hall. She urged listeners not to halt at the achievement of the centenary but to press forward into a second century of service and mission.
A united salvation meeting for Seoul and South Seoul divisions took place in the afternoon, with a performance of traditional music and dance by Oh Ka Corps musicians and contributions from the Korea Mission Singers, Yung Deung Po Songster Brigade and the Korea Staff Band. Following the Chief’s message, many came forward to the altar.
Prior to her departure on Monday morning, Dunster visited territorial headquarters.
