Norwegian War Cry writer Rebecca Solvaag and Major Debra Shrum, Golden State Division secretary for program, recently welcomed volunteer Lyle Richardson as he brought in his most recent contribution to assist HIV positive babies being helped by The Salvation Army in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Included were 40 hand-crocheted afghans and 40 hand-stitched teddy bears made by women from West Valley Presbyterian Church in San Mateo, CA. The bears were vacuum-packed for traveling to be arranged by Majors Wes and Ruth Sundin on their way to Estonia.
Richardson, a professional vocalist and choir director, calls his efforts “This Little Light of Mine,” as part of his continuing commitment to his ministry of music. Working with Lt. Colonel Isa McDougald and Captain Mariam Rudd, he initiated the project nearly three years ago and has returned to Russia twice to see the babies. To date, nearly $25,000 has been raised on the babies’ behalf.
