Sundin Initiates Home League Program in St. Petersburg, CIS
Five years ago, under the leadership of Lt. Colonel and Mrs. John Bjartveit of Norway, The Salvation Army came to St. Petersburg, Russia. Today there are six corps in St. Petersburg and one corps and outpost in Petrozavodsk, about six hours’ driving time to the northeast. Led by Major Ruth Sundin, regional director of Women’s Organizations, 65 women attended the first Home League Seminar and Rally in St. Petersburg. With rapt attention they listened as Majors Jocelyn Knapp and Cilla Bone of Australia taught the art of planning and conducting a Home League meeting.
Lt. Alina Henderson of the Western Territory, now serving at the Peterhof Corps, was one of six new members enrolled, and there were 12 more women enrolled on Sunday at the Central Corps. The theme, “We Have an Anchor,” was both a faith statement and a reference to the 300 year old Russian Navy. Also, the women of St. Petersburg have found an anchor in Jesus Christ, who will sustain them in the dark and difficult days of economic reforms.
