The countdown to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games continues. Of the many concerns in Salt Lake City during this period of preparation, security is especially important. All official Olympic venues are protected by high security measures. Additional police and National Guard from communities across the country are being seconded to service at the Games.
People working inside the venues, including The Salvation Army More Than Gold 2002 volunteers, are being accredited through the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) in a process that includes background checks.
“The Salvation Army More Than Gold ministries are proceeding at an exciting pace,” said coordinator Dan Williams. “Our hydration services will be at 14 venue locations, using four mobile canteens and 10 tents staffed by 300+ volunteers, including 167 members of Mission/Service Teams. In addition to providing water to spectators, we will be serving the SLOC volunteers and bus drivers by providing hot beverages and handing out box meals.”
The More Than Gold Ministry Center is under development for use as a hospitality center during the Games. Enter-tainment, an Internet café, a pin trading area and other people-to-people ministries will be hosted at this location.
While participating in the excitement of the Games in these various ways, the Salt Lake Basin Command will continue to provide social services as always.
Volunteers from as far away as Nampa, Idaho have expressed interest in serving at the community dining room during the Games.
The world is coming to Salt Lake City in just under 70 days…The Salvation Army and other evangelicals are excited about the unique blessing of service being afforded us during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games!
