God is doing some amazing things in Compton!

Joshua 3:5 (NIV) says, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” Recently, on Valentine’s weekend Sunday, the Lord did some amazing things at the Compton, Calif. Corps.

The corps experienced its first entire outdoor ministry day, with the help of the corps members, a first-year cadet brigade and a “Fringle.”

Corps officer Captain Martin Ross said, “Our priority is mission, and our mission is on the streets. We’ve been prayer walking the streets and trying to increase our ministry presence with multicultural outreach—outreach to the area’s predominantly African-American and Hispanic/Latino population. And we asked ourselves, why have ministry indoors when we can do it outdoors!”

The outdoor ministry day began with a holiness meeting and ended with a carnival. During the carnival the public enjoyed a puppet show, presented by Migdalia Roehl (a territorial headquarters’ employee) and John Tavitian, depicting the Booth Tucker/Commissioner Doris Noland story of God’s love for everyone, illustrated by the giant puppet Fringle distributing “hearts of God’s love” to the children.

“It was my first experience participating in a Salvation Army activity,” said Tavitian. “It was both entertaining and enjoyable with wonderful music, dance, songs of worship, and prayer. I am so very appreciative to The Salvation Army in Compton for allowing us this pleasurable opportunity.”

Next were presentations of the children’s choir and the debut of the Compton Steel Drum Band. Adding to the festive atmosphere were games and free hot dogs for all.

Over 60 people experienced the ministry of the Compton Corps at both the open-air service and the multicultural carnival.
