The Salvation Army’s legendary bell-ringing kettles will ring out the spirit of Christmas at more than 2700 Wal-Mart, SuperCenters, and SAM’s Club stores across the nation this year as the country’s leading retailer joins forces with the Army in reaching out to those in need.
The joint effort, called “Spirit of the Kettle,” helps to fund the Army’s distribution of food, clothing and toys as well as hot meals during the holiday season.
“We are pleased to work with The Salvation Army in this outreach effort,” said Donald Soderquist, Wal-Mart’s vice chairman and chief operating officer.
“I know of no agency that has gained greater respect for its efforts to help others–not just the underprivileged, but everyone in times of disaster.”
National Commander Commissioner Robert A. Watson said, “This is a wonderful partnership with Wal-Mart that will benefit communities all across the country.”
Local Salvation Army units, with their own personnel and an army of volunteers will supply the bell ringers at the Wal-Mart facilities.
“We hope that as people are shopping during this time of the year they will not forget those who are still in need,” said Soderquist. “That’s the real spirit of the season expressed in ‘The Spirit of the Kettle’. “
