Tireless work of volunteers cited at annual luncheon.

“One of the things that makes America great is our history of volunteerism,” said DeDe Hicks, director of the South Bay Volunteer Center, in her keynote address. “Volunteering brings delight,” she continued. “Find your ideal volunteer job; it will bring delight to you.”
A crowd of 150 gathered at the Torrance Corps, Calif., as volunteers were recognized for their contributions to the work of The Salvation Army in Torrance throughout the year. Good Neighbor awards were presented to Michelle Ferryman of Northrop Grumman and Arlene Kay of the Mills Corporation for their contribution to His House social services. Adult Day Care award recipients were Krystal Sylvia, Pat Hoyle and Doris Herzog, as well as Karen Liebig who represented the Julius Summer Foundation. Suguru Kawamoto and Sara Chung, of the West High Interact Club, were recognized for assisting in the preschool program.
Volunteers of the year were: His House, Michelle Ferryman; Adult day care, Carla Nay; Preschool, Udayabagya Halim; Torrance Corps and administration, Major Arlene Dooley, Helen Nowatka and Angela Edwards.
Major Paul Seiler, Southern California divisional commander, conducted the installation of new advisory board officers, reminding them that through their Salvation Army service they touch many lives. Officers for the coming year are: John Kaper, chair, John Messerlian, vice chair, Mary Giordano, treasurer, and Willliam Franchini, secretary.
A surprise presentation was the Katy Geissert Helping Hands Award given to DeDe Hicks for her outstanding leadership in the area of volunteerism.
“We would not be able to provide the services we do without the tireless efforts and work of our many volunteers,” said Captain Ivan Wild, Torrance corps officer, in his closing remarks.
