Colonel Harold George Barry (R) was recently promoted to Glory from St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif.
Barry was born in 1910 of officer parents in Waukesha, Wisc. He entered the San Francisco Training College from Salt Lake City, Utah, and was commissioned a probationary captain with the Fight It Through session in 1932.
After service at the Training College, he was appointed to the Yakima Corps. He was at divisional headquarters and then THQ from 1938 until he entered service as a U.S. Army chaplain. He married Adjutant Faith Boyd in 1941.
During World War II he served in North Africa and Italy as a chaplain, where he was honored with the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge with wreath.
In 1946, released from chaplain service, he was appointed to Southern California Divisional Headquarters as the divisional secretary.
Barry had varied assignments, including territorial public relations secretary. In 1958, as brigadier, he became territorial staff secretary, and in 1961 was promoted to Lt. Colonel. In 1962 he served as So. California divisional commander.
From 1966 to 1972, he served in the East as executive director of the Flushing, N.Y., Memorial Hospital and then as chief secretary in the East. From then he was Western chief secretary until they moved in retirement to Carmel, Calif. In 1975. After the promotion to Glory of Mrs. Barry in 1990, the Colonel moved to Santa Ana, Calif., and a year later married Dorothy DuRocher, whom he had known all his life.
The Colonel is survived by his wife and his beloved nieces and nephews, including Lt. Colonel Janice Buchanan, Captain Sylvia Peterson, Lyle Burr, Robert Barry, David Hoyt, and Robert Hoyt.
A memorial service conducted by Captain Lee Lescano was held at Tustin Ranch Corps. Private interment was at the National Military Cemetery at Riverside, Calif.

Major Richard Smith (R) was promoted to Glory recently from the Methodist Hospital in Sacramento, Calif.
Dick was born in 1933 in Walla Walla, Wash. He was the only boy in a family of seven children, all but one of whom entered Salvation Army officership. After Commissioning in 1955 with the Soul-Winners Session, he married Lt. Evelyn Hoffman. They went as corps officers to Grass Valley, Calif., followed by corps appointments in California and Hawaii.
An innovative and energetic officer, he had many ideas to help motivate people. With his camera always ready, he caught scenes worthy of a newsman. At Santa Monica, his faithful hospital ministry resulted in a three and a half million dollar legacy from a patient, providing funds for the Santa Monica Silvercrest.
Their service with what is now the Adult Rehabilitation Centers Command began as trainees at Oakland, and administrators at Portland, San Bernardino, Denver, and Van Nuys. Their last appointment was at Sacramento ARC, from which they retired in 1995.
Smith is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and four sons: Dennis, Richard, Lt. Philip Smith, and Alan. He also leaves sisters: Mrs. Brigadier Olive Yardley (R), and Mrs. Brigadier Marion Rudd-Wold (R) as well as nieces and nephew Lt. Col. Sherryl Van Cleef, Colonel Carol Saunders and Captain Bob Rudd.
A memorial service will be held at the Sacramento Corps on Sunday April 19 at 4:00 p.m. with Captain Bob Rudd officiating.
