ATLANTA, GA— As Japan reels from the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country a week ago, donations have poured in from across the world. But here in the United States, the Salvation Army is warning of an email scam that’s asking for donations on behalf of the organization.
The email claims to be from the Salvation Army National Corp., and “urges donors to send a donation to an email address which is not a valid Salvation Army address.” The organization said the scam also includes real information about the Salvation Army that makes the email look reliable, but it’s really all just a trick.
People interested in donating to the Salvation Army’s relief efforts can do so by visiting the Salvation Army USA’s national website atwww.salvationarmyusa.org. There are also four other ways people can contribute money to the disaster relief efforts in Japan:
- Text the words “Japan” or “QUAKE” to 80888 to make a $10 donation.
- By phone: 1-800-SAL-ARMY
- By mail: send your check marked “Japan earthquake relief” to
