Promoted to Glory

Lt. Colonel Tena J. Johnson was promoted to Glory on Oct. 31, 2010, from Orange, Calif., surrounded by her family.

Tena Hoeksel was born on March 23, 1911, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She entered training in Chicago, Ill., as a member of the Guardians of the Covenant Session and was commissioned in 1937.

Tena married Lt. Warren Johnson in 1938, serving with him as corps officer in various Central Territory appointments. They served in the Men’s Social Service Department (now the Adult Rehabilitation Centers) in both Detroit and Flint, Mich.

The Johnsons relocated to the Western Territory in 1952, continuing their service in the Men’s Social Service Department. In 1967, they transferred to the Southern Territory where they served for 13 years, With Brigadier Johnson assuming leadership of the Territorial Men’s Social Service Department.

They were promoted to the ranks of Lt. Colonel in 1969.

The Johnsons retired in 1979 and moved to Santa Ana, Calif., to be near family. Warren Johnson was promoted to Glory on June 6, 2001.

Tena Johnson is survived by two sons—Warren C. Johnson Jr. (Darlene) of Orange, Calif., and Robert G. Johnson (Betty) of La Habra, Calif.—six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Majors Lee and Michele Lescano, Tustin Ranch corps officers, conducted her graveside service in early November at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, Calif.
