Celebrate The Salvation Army May 10-16, 2010.
by Kathy Lovin –
Every year during the middle of May we celebrate National Salvation Army Week. Created during the 1950s by a proclamation from the pen of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, National Salvation Army week honors the good work being done by The Salvation Army to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those in darkness and serve suffering humanity in communities all across America.
This year, National Salvation Army Week will be celebrated from May 10 through May 16, 2010. Volunteers, businesses and other partners in mission will join Salvation Army centers nationwide to create awareness about the Army’s work.
Here in the West, the week will be honored with a number of activities. For instance, a Salvation Army brass band will play the National Anthem as the Colorado Rockies take on the Washington Nationals on Friday, May 14. The Salvation Army in Salt Lake City will host their annual “Doing The Most Good” Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 12, recognizing all William Booth Society Members and honoring deserving corporations and volunteers with an awards ceremony. Also, the Sacramento Salvation Army will hold the grand opening of their new family service center with a ribbon cutting, special music and a tour of the facility.
As a Salvationist, volunteer or friend of the Army, you can honor National Salvation Army Week too! Here are a few simple things you can do to spread the good word about the work of the Army:
· Wear your uniform, a Salvation Army T-shirt, pin or hat as you do your daily activities. Engage people in conversation about the Army!
· Practice your “elevator speech” about what makes you love The Salvation Army so you’ll be ready to share with your friends during National Salvation Army Week. An “elevator speech” is a brief prepared presentation (about the length of a short elevator ride!) that grabs attention and says a lot in a few words.
· Use social media to tell your network about what the Army is doing in your community. Check our websites, blog, YouTube channel and Facebook group pages for great information you can share with your friends.
