Nevada governor visits Army unit
Nevada Governor Jjm Gibbons paid a surprise visit to the Army’s recent emergency disaster training event in Los Vegas. Emergency management groups joined together at a Boyd Gaming property, The Orleans, for a mobile command post training. The Army had its new state of the art mobile kitchen managed by Vista volunteers Phillip Olivas and Darin Washington, and Salvation Army volunteer and donor Dr. Sue Parker.
Bozeman explosion
The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services (EDS) responded immediately to an explosion that rocked downtown Bozeman, Mont., reports Bozeman Corps Officer Major Hendrik Aalders, who stated the Army provided 900 meals, snacks, hydration and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and emergency workers. In addition, due to the frigid weather they supplied more than 60 pairs of socks and 30 hand warmers to the workers. Twenty volunteers assisted with preparing, serving, and delivering meals.
Seattle hosts Bremerton
The Seattle Temple Corps Home League hosted the Bremerton Corps Home League, led by Corps Officer Major Marcia Baker, to a St. Patrick’s Day themed time of service, lunch and crafts. For their service project, the women made Christmas tags from old Christmas cards that are distributed with the Toy n’ Joy Tree donations. Seattle Temple Corps Officers Majors Rob and Stacy Birks gave the program; Major Rob emceed the St. Patrick’s Day trivia game, and Major Stacy taught how to make a shamrock boutonniere and closed the afternoon with an Irish blessing. Seattle Temple Corps Home League Secretary Joyce Johnston and assistant, Colonel Marianne Tobin, planned the events. Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries Lt. Colonel Diane O’Brien also attended.
Denver celebrates St. Pat’s
Captain Ron McKinney, Denver metro city coordinator, marched alongside the EDS communications van and the newest EDS canteen at St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Denver. The parade—the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade west of the Mississippi—included nearly 250 entries and attracted a crowd in excess of 150,000.
New appointments
Captains Mike & Kongma Phrasavath have been appointed to the Northwest DHQ, Special Assignment, effective April 6, 2009; Mr. & Mrs. Kalvin & Micki Bizek have been appointed in-charge – Bellevue (Eastside) Corps, effective April 6, 2009; Majors William & Brenda Hathorn have been appointed corps officers – Nampa Corps, Idaho, effective April 29, 2009.
