Finland—General Shaw Clifton and Commissioner Helen Clifton attended the recent Finland and Estonia Territorial Congress in Helsinki, Finland, as guest leaders. The congress theme–“Never the Same Again”–came from the similarly named book by the General. The book, recently translated into Finnish, was produced by one of the biggest Christian publishers in Finland prior to the congress.
During the weekend, a “Hallelujah” tram traveled for two hours during open air activities throughout Helsinki, the Hendon Band from London performed a concert in the famous Helsinki Rock Church, and Territorial Commander Colonel André Cox commissioned the three cadets of the God’s Fellow Workers Session.
Papua New Guinea—Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Robin Dunster, recently traveled to Papua New Guinea to lead celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Salvation Army work in the country’s Highlands region. Before becoming an officer, Dunster worked in this region.
The congress began with a prayer assembly at the National Sports Institute in Goroka and included an open air meeting at the national park before thousands of spectators, men’s and women’s rallies, a 1,000-person march through the town of Goroka, and holiness meetings with thousands in attendance.
Estonia—After a furlough in California, Western Territory officers Capts. Daniel and Anya Henderson have returned to their appointments in Estonia, where they found the Narva Corps family intact and peaceful, thanks to the leadership of Capts. Aleksey and Julia Burunova. On Aug. 31 they enrolled five senior soldiers and five junior soldiers; the junior soldiers came through Sunday school and four of the five senior soldiers are new Christians.
The Hendersons have requested prayer as they seek to balance family, corps and regional needs. Some of Daniel’s concerns are the construction of a corps building in Narva, and repairs at the Army’s Hope House and Loksa Camp. Anya works with cadets, the youth ministry and the camp program. Capt. Julia Burunova is taking on the responsibility of the Narva Corps HIV Project.
