Over 700 people receive free health screenings.
The Torrance, Calif. corps recently welcomed over 700 people to its 15th community health fair. This year, for the first time, the City of Torrance partnered with The Salvation Army in this annual event. The corps’ Adult Day Care Center is the sponsor; however, the fair is open for all ages.
Setting up booths and tables and distributing information and freebies were numerous groups and agencies that work with the elderly. Local doctors and nurses donated their time, providing free health evaluations in these areas: ask the doctor, ask the pharmacist, osteoporosis screening, stroke screening, diabetes screening, blood pressure, hearing, pulmonary, spinal alignment, body fat analysis, and cholesterol screening.
The City of Torrance issued a proclamation honoring the health fair, and City Councilman Paul Nowatka presented the proclamation to the corps.
Participating sponsors of the fair included Julius Sumner Miller Foundation, Kiwanis of Torrance, Little Company of Mary and Torrance Memorial hospitals, Scan Health Plan and South Bay Sunrise Rotary. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. provided a tent, and the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs provided hot dogs and popcorn. Their youth groups also featured live entrainment.
“It was great to partner with the City of Torrance and so many local groups for our 15th annual health fair,” said Corps Officer Major Ivan Wild. “Many people from the community benefited from the health screenings. It was a most worthwhile event.”
