So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. (Col. 3:12-13 The Message)

Shopping Spree Helps Families

A local supermarket contest granted a two-minute shopping spree for a Marina, Calif., resident and the charity of her choice. Clover Reeves and her husband Steve chose The Salvation Army because the Army has always been there for them. “I could never be able to fully repay the kindness The Salvation Army has shown me,” says Reeves, “so this is the least I could do.”

Joshua Sneed, Monterey Peninsula corps assistant, ran the shopping spree. The Army ended up with seven full shopping carts of food, which would retail for $824.15. Steve and Deniece Gates, who own the Grocery Outlet!, have offered to help the Army keep food in the pantry when times get tougher.

Well done

Congratulations go to Captain William Mikesell, who recently received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Natural Sciences/Mathematics from Thomas Edison State College, and to Major Donna Ames, who received a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Bell Shelter receives funds

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) awarded The Salvation Army Bell Shelter $205,725 as part of Metro’s Job Access and Reverse Commute funding (JARC) program. The program has two major goals: (1) to provide transportation services in urban, suburban and rural areas that would assist welfare recipients and other low-income individuals in accessing employment opportunities; and (2) to increase collaboration among regional transportation providers, human service agencies and related service providers, employers and affected communities

Sierra del Mar Goes To Camp

The 65 employees of the Army’s divisional headquarters recently were treated to a day at camp at the newly rebuilt Sierra del Mar Camp and Conference Center northeast of San Diego. The camp had been significantly damaged by last year’s firestorm and employees were thrilled to see the new buildings and pavilion. Employee Appreciation Day began with freshly baked muffins, coffee, and tea and participants enjoyed activities ranging from hiking and mountain biking to relaxing board games on the camp veranda.

New session named

General John Larsson has named the 2006/2008 session of cadets: God’s Fellow Workers, a direct quote from 2 Corinthians 6:1. In the NIV version, Paul writes: As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.

Torrance store voted best

The Salvation Army Torrance, Calif., thrift store was recently voted “#1 Thrift Store in the South Bay,” reports Captain Kevin Hanson, administrator for the Long Beach ARC.

He states, “We have worked hard to improve the quality of the store: reorganizing the layout, replacing fixtures, and working with our employees on customer service. In addition, we have acquired an excellent manager, Aracelli Paradez, who puts an emphasis on accountability.”
