MAJOR JAMES L. BERRY was promoted to Glory December 5, 2002 from the Polar Living Center Nursing Home in Casper, Wyoming.
He was born February 11, 1914 in Marysville, Missouri.
He entered the training college from the Santa Ana Corps and was commissioned in July 1932 with the Fight It Through Session. At 18, James was the youngest member of the session. He met Annabelle Carter, a cadet, and they were married in 1936.
The Berrys served together in appointments in Roseburg, Medford, Grants Pass, Oregon City, and Pendleton, Oregon; Compton and Whittier, Calif.; the Service Extension department, Southern California Division; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Billings and Butte, Montana.
During World War II, the Berrys ran doughnut “huts” at railroad stations in Pendleton, La Grande, and Huntington, Oregon. In their last appointment in Butte, Montana, they continued to express the pioneering spirit of the Army at their daily prayer sessions with waitresses in a local restaurant.
They retired from active service in 1979. After retirement, James worked for Lou Taubert’s Western Clothing Store for ten years. He enjoyed his work as it gave him the opportunity to witness to the customers.
Major Annabelle Berry was promoted to Glory in October 2001.
A service of remembrance was held at Bustard’s Funeral Home in Casper, Wyoming. Captain Keith Bottjen, Sr., brought the message.
Messages of condolence may be sent to his son, Joe Berry, 2145 Frances Street, Casper, WY 82601.
