The recent shooting at Santana High School, in Santee, Calif., was a tragic reminder of life’s uncertainty: in the last few weeks we’ve had earthquakes in Seattle, record blizzards in New England, and continued violence in Israel. We can’t control much of life–but we can know that God is with us. Psalm 46:1 says “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.”
I am thankful for the Army’s ministry to those who are navigating troubled times–read on for some wonderful examples.

FAITHFUL SOLDIERS
The Southern California Division recently gathered to celebrate “Salvationists in Action,” recognizing outstanding service within the community.
Lt. Colonel Alfred R. Van Cleef, divisional commander, paid tribute to four exceptional soldiers: Roque Arbues, Santa Ana Temple Corps bandmaster, who has demonstrated commitment, patience and leadership to the band and his students; Claudia Carrion, Los Angeles Central Corps, was honored for her service with the Barrio Ministry, which brings the word of God to children in neighborhoods surrounding downtown Los Angeles; Jake and Alice Ames, both soldiers for more than seven decades, were recognized for their faithful service at Torrance Corps; Ian Fairbank, Pasadena Tabernacle Corps was honored for his devotion to the corps and continuous encouragement of others.
IN APPRECIATION
Richard Dilday, president of JCM Facilities Planning and Management, presented Major Ralph Hood with a replica of the praying hands located in front of the chapel at THQ. “Congratulations on the completion of The Salvation Army Western THQ,” he said. “Thank you for the vision, guidance and determination that enabled us to build this House.”
