by Captain Robert L. Rudd –
Majors James and Judy Goodwin, Bellingham, Wash., corps officers, report a lot of fund-raising is going on in preparation for next year’s International Congress. Bellingham has 38 delegates planning to attend. A 20–family garage sale started the ball rolling, and a cook book is being readied in time for Christmas gifts. Local fairs will provide an opportunity to sell hot dogs and cotton candy.
HAWK HONORED
Captain Guy Hawk of the Riverside (Calif.) Corps was recently recognized with the Monsignor Nightingale “Fund for Youth” 1999 Good Samaritan Award by the Catholic Charities of San Bernardino/Riverside Counties. He received this award for his work in serving at-risk children and low income families. Also receiving this award was Mayor Judith Valles of San Bernardino.
LADIES’ NEEDLES BUSY
Major Jacque Fritz of the San Bernardino, Calif., Corps reports that the Women’s Auxiliary and Home League made 50 pairs of booties for the AIDS Home in St. Petersburg, Russia. They are grateful to the Salvationist who delivered them. Also, preemies at the St. Bernardine’s Hospital may be wearing a hat or blanket, a thoughtful new project of the Home League.
HICKMAN HOUSE BENEFITS
Recently, The Northwest Division has partnered with three groups: the Paul Allen Foundation, the Girl Scouts, and the West Seattle Rotary, to build a beautiful new playground and quiet area for the Hickman House, transitional housing apartments for families who have been through domestic violence. Lt. Colonel Chris Buchanan, divisional commander, and Captain Paul Seiler, general secretary, were present at the recent dedication. Also attending was Miss Lindsey Hampson, who is the Girl Scout who helped develop this project as part of a badge requirement and was honored with the NSFRE Washington State Young Philanthropist of the Year Award. It was a time of appreciation and thanks for this new addition to Hickman House.
BIKER BONUS
Captain Marilee Estes, Bakersfield, Calif., corps officer, has had a large part in organizing the local Motorcycle Toy Runs which bring in not only toys, but good will for bikers and The Salvation Army. This started in 1975 in Los Angeles as the idea of the Motorcycle Associations, but the Army has brought legitimacy and is nonprofit, nondiscriminational, and nondenominational in distribution of the donation. Also, the Army has access to the media that can inform the bikers and the public about the upcoming events. They provide a planning and meeting place, and last year, donations filled an ARC truck. Much of this was enhanced by Estes’ good work. Congratulations!
PRAYER NEEDED FAST!
Major Wes Sundin writes that former Moldova soldiers of theirs are now officers opening the work in Romania. Lts. Valery and Vica Lalac report they are working against great odds in Romania, as people don’t want to listen to their message about Jesus Christ. They would like to begin a prayer support team. Whoever wants to join this prayer team, e-mail them at peace@mail.md and they will send details. Prayer can do great things!
PRAYING PARTNERS
Lt. Colonel Mervyn Morelock (R) reports there are more than 2,000 prayer partners now, and that the West’s toll free prayer line is receiving more than 80 calls per week. Pray on!
